Flu shots are now available for people at higher risk of flu complications. Talk to your doctor, nurse practitioner or visit a public health unit. As the cold weather approaches, University Pharmacy is reminding everyone about the importance of getting their free flu shot to protect themselves from getting the flu and spreading it to others.

Each year, thousands of people across the province get sick with the flu, which puts extra pressure on hospitals and the health care system. The flu shot provides the best defense and is a proven way to reduce emergency department visits and wait times to help end hallway health care.

“Every Ontarian can join our efforts to put an end to hallway health care by getting their flu shot,” said Christine Elliott, Ontario Health Minister. “In fact, getting your flu shot is an important part of keeping all Ontarians healthy and out of hospital, while reducing the strain on our emergency departments. Flu shots will be available across the province to protect you and your family.”

The free flu shot is especially important for young children, pregnant women and people 65 years and older who are at high risk of flu-related complications. It will be available at family doctor and nurse practitioner offices, public health units and participating pharmacies for anyone five years of age or older. For children between six months and four years old, the shot can be administered by a doctor or nurse practitioner.

Quick Facts About the Flu & Flu Shots

  • The flu is a contagious illness that can result in a hospital stay or can lead to complications such as pneumonia, heart attack or, in rare cases, death.
  • Flu season can start as early as November. It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to reach full effect, so be sure to get the shot as soon as it’s available.
  • Young children – especially those under two – pregnant women and seniors are particularly at risk of serious complications due to the flu.
  • A 2018 Canadian study found that people are six times more likely to have a heart attack in the week after having the flu, and this risk may be higher among those 65 years and older.
  • Last flu season, there were about 5,450 flu-related hospitalizations in Ontario and 275 flu-related deaths.

WHAT’S NEW TO ONTARIO PHARMACIES

As of January 1st, 2023, Ontario’s pharmacists are now able to assess and prescribe medications for minor ailments aka common conditions such as cold sores, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, hemorrhoids, pink eye and more (see the FAQs for a complete list of eligible conditions).

This means you can visit your pharmacist and receive the necessary care, including a consultation and treatment for your ailment, all in one appointment.

Answers to commonly asked questions about Ontario’s new Pharmacy Minor Ailments Program are outlined below. Contact your University Pharmacy pharmacist for more information.

FAQs

For which minor ailments can Ontario’s pharmacists assess and prescribe medications?

Minor ailments, also known as common conditions, can be managed with minimal treatment and don’t require blood or lab testing for assessment. Even though short-term, some of these conditions can negatively impact your daily routine and quality of life.

Pharmacists in Ontario will be able to assess, recommend and prescribe treatments for the following minor ailments:

  • Bacterial skin infection (impetigo)
  • Cold sores
  • Eczema and allergic skin rash
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Menstrual pain
  • Nasal allergies (i.e., hay fever)
  • Pink eye (due to allergies or bacteria)
  • Thrush (fungal infection of the mouth)
  • Tick bites (Lyme disease prevention)
  • Urinary Tract Infection (uncomplicated)

Pharmacists are highly educated healthcare providers and medication experts whose university training prepares them to assess and treat these minor ailments.

I always speak with my pharmacist about my health concerns. How is a minor ailment consultation different?

A minor ailment consultation is a scheduled appointment with a pharmacist during which you will discuss your symptoms, medical history and other relevant factors to select the most appropriate treatment course for you. A more detailed assessment is undertaken as your pharmacist now has more potential treatment options to draw from and will be responsible for monitoring the outcomes of the recommended treatment.

This consultation may result in the pharmacist recommending non-drug measures to help alleviate your symptoms, an over-the-counter medication or an eligible prescription medication.

If your pharmacist feels your condition is more serious, requires additional assessment or requires treatment by a medication that pharmacists are not authorized to prescribe, you may be referred to a physician.

How can I access this minor ailment consultation service at my pharmacy?

A minor ailments consultation can be booked with your Pharmasave pharmacist by contacting your local pharmacy. They may direct you to an online appointment scheduling platform, or they may schedule an appointment with you over the phone at a mutually convenient time.

A minor ailments consultation may take place in-person or virtually (i.e., via telephone or a web-based platform), depending on the nature of your condition and the pharmacist’s professional discretion.

What about my family doctor?

A minor ailments consultation is part of ongoing medical care provided by your team of healthcare providers, which may include a family doctor, pharmacist, specialists and other healthcare professionals. Pharmacists are required to notify your family doctor, should you have one, about the details of the minor ailments consultation and treatments recommended to facilitate continuity within your circle of care and ensure your medical record is complete.

The expanded role of pharmacists gives you an alternative, timely option for accessing healthcare services; your family doctor remains an important part of your circle of care as pharmacists can only assess and prescribe for select conditions. Earlier involvement of a pharmacist in your care means more serious conditions can be differentiated from minor ones, and you can be referred to the appropriate healthcare provider for additional assessment and treatment as needed.

How much does this service cost, and who is eligible?

This service is covered by the government for individuals with a valid OHIP number. For those individuals without coverage, a service fee will be charged.

As a note, the costs discussed above are for the actual ‘assessment’ service. In cases where an over-the-counter treatment option is recommended, the medication cost would be additionally charged. Drug plans recognize Pharmacists as prescribers; therefore, in cases where prescription medication is prescribed, your drug insurance plan, should you have one, may cover the cost of the prescription.

Do I have to pay? Is it covered by OHIP or other provincial health insurance plans?

Virtual care is covered by the provincial health plan in Ontario (OHIP), Alberta (AHCIP), and British Columbia (MSP), but not the other provinces. Patients with a valid Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia health card will not be charged. Patients in other provinces will receive a receipt that may be reimbursed through a health spending account or other private insurance.

 

 

What is the price? How much does Tia cost?

Tia Health is covered by MSP and OHIP, patients with a valid Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia Health Card will not be charged. For other provinces, appointment pricing ranges depending on the appointment type you select. There are no time-based fees or additional fees if an appointment lasts longer than expected. Appointments are also Covered by OHIP, AHCIP and MSP, a receipt is provided. Yearly and monthly membership plans are available through insurance brokers.

 

 

Is it legit?

Yes. All of our doctors are Canadian licensed physicians. You can verify the status of their license and view their credentials on the college of physicians website for the province they are licensed. The city and province in which the physician practices is listed on their profile while navigating the booking process.

 

 

Can I choose which doctor I speak with?

Yes, we have a variety of doctors, male and female, doctors who speak different languages, and with different specialties.

 

 

How do I get a prescription? Will my pharmacy accept it?

Our doctors’ prescriptions are legitimate and are accepted by pharmacies. You can have your prescriptions sent to your pharmacy of choice. Your medication will be prepared and made available for pick-up or delivery.

Is Tia Health safe?

Yes. Tia Health is the platform connecting you to a Canadian physician or other provider of your choice. Just like an in-person visit, the doctor is responsible for understanding your case, medical history, and determining the appropriate treatment. If the doctor is not able to help through virtual care, they will advise that you visit a clinic or hospital in-person.

Is Tia Health secure?

Your privacy is our top priority, we use bank-level encryption and store data securely in Canada.

How do I book an appointment?

Pharmasave Western Plaza provides COVID-19 testing for Travel or Work purposes as well as for some eligible groups who are identified regularly by the Ministry of Health.

Testing for Travel or Work:

We provide 2 types of COVID-19 tests for Travel or Work purposes: RT-PCR Test or Antigen Test. Please confirm directly with your airline or your employer which type of COVID-19 Test they require before booking.

A)   RT-PCR Test (Cost $160 CDN + HST)

Required as a prerequisite by some countries for travel purposes or by some employers for work purposes (Please confirm directly with your Airline or Employer)

COVID-19 PCR Test Results:

Results are released within 24 – 48 hours.

Your Laboratory Test Report / Official Certificate is issued directly by our processing Lab. The Official Laboratory Test Report can be e-mailed to you by emailing your request to wpp@universitypharmacy.ca

Alternatively, the Official Lab Test Report can be picked up in person from the pharmacy within regular business hours, once results are released. A Hard Copy of the Lab Test Report can be stamped by the Pharmacy upon request and picked up in person during regular business hours.

We hope this finds you and your families in good health. Covid-19 has created many challenges for everyone.

With the re-opening of schools and businesses in Ontario, your University Pharmacies have now returned to regular hours of operation.
